The Bill Tripp Jr.–designed Hinckley Bermuda 40 is an American sailing classic. Its lines, mirror-finish varnish, polished stainless steel fittings, and timeless design have drawn admiration from boaters since hull #1 launched in 1960. More than 200 Bermuda 40s were built between 1960 and 1991, and MOONLIGHT is considered one of the best-preserved examples on the market today. MOONLIGHT was originally built to the exacting standards of a Swiss jeweler, who enlisted a Geneva-based architect to oversee her construction in Maine on a monthly basis. After completion, she was shipped to Switzerland and spent twenty years on Lake Geneva's fresh water before returning to The Hinckley Company in Maine in 2001, where her second owner used her for seasonal cruising in New England. Her third owners purchased MOONLIGHT in 2017 and invested more than $200,000 in maintenance and upgrades, including a new engine, new electronics, a renovated galley and head, and refinished exterior varnish.
MOONLIGHT's interior includes a full-width salon, a dedicated navigation station, a galley, a head, and a forward cabin. Interior joinery is gloss-varnished Honduras mahogany, and the cabin sole is mahogany and holly. The main and forward hatches are Hinckley-built of teak and translucent plexiglass and are double hinged to allow them to open forward or aft. There are LED lights and new Hella fans throughout the interior.
Main Salon The salon seats six around a drop-leaf dining table with two pull-out drawers. It has a U-shaped seating area to port and a transom berth with a pilot berth above to starboard, plus a book/bottle shelf and hanging locker. Interior cushions were re-upholstered in 2026.
Galley (renovated 2018) MOONLIGHT's galley was completely renovated in 2018 with an L-shaped counter, an undermount stainless steel sink, a pressurized water faucet, a new manual freshwater pump, a Grunert heavy-duty refrigerator/freezer, a new three-burner stove, and a new convection oven/microwave.
Navigation Station The dedicated nav station is on the starboard side, with an upholstered seat, a pull-out drawer, a large nav desk with storage, two open shelves, and the boat's electric panel and electronics.
Head (renovated 2018) MOONLIGHT's head was renovated in 2018 with a new counter, undermount stainless steel sink, pressurized hot/cold water faucet, shower head, mirror, storage cabinets, and a manual marine head.
Forward Cabin The private forward cabin has a V-berth with pull-out drawers on both sides, a starboard hanging locker opposite a five-drawer dresser, an open cubby, and shelves on either side of the berth. A bulkhead door separates the forward cabin from the forepeak.
The cockpit has a bridge deck, two large seat lockers, and a teak coaming with scuttles for gear stowage. A 28-inch stainless steel wheel is mounted on a steering pedestal with a compass, wheel brake, throttle, clutch controls, and a 12-inch Garmin chart plotter (2018).
MOONLIGHT has a painted aluminum tapered mast and a boom with in-mast furling (Hood Stow'ay 2 with electric drive). The spars and standing rigging were inspected in 2018 when the mast was un-stepped for transport to Charleston, South Carolina. All standing rigging is 1x19 stainless steel wire with swaged terminals.
MOONLIGHT underwent a major mechanical refit in 2018, centered on her 2017 Yanmar 4JH45 (45 HP) engine.
